Kazakhstan has been selected among seven innovative projects by the Mitigation Action Facility, with a total budget of EUR 6 million. Implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the project aims to enhance grid efficiency, reduce energy losses, and decrease reliance on coal-based power generation.
Key Objectives:
- Analyze current policies and introduce regulatory reforms to modernize the grid.
- Demonstrate the feasibility of advanced technologies.
- Strengthen the financial sector’s capacity for green investments.
- Encourage regional replication of successful solutions.
Why It Matters:
Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, with the energy sector contributing 85% of national emissions. Electricity and heat generation alone account for more than half of these emissions.
Contributions to Climate Goals:
- Supports Kazakhstan’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 15% unconditionally and 25% conditionally by 2030.
- Aligns with the Concept for Energy Saving and Efficiency (2023–2029).
Expected Impact:
- Reduced energy transmission losses.
- Adoption of energy-saving technologies.
- Prevention of over 114 million tons of CO2 emissions.
