Green Tech Commercialization Reactor Held in Aktau: Technology and Partnerships for a Sustainable Future of Mangystau

Aktau, August 2, 2025 – The city of Aktau hosted the Green Tech Commercialization Reactor, a technology brokerage event organized by the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects (IGTIPC) as part of the GCIP-Kazakhstan 2025 program.

The event served as a key platform for identifying practical environmental solutions by uniting the efforts of business, academia, and government agencies to address the challenges of sustainable development in the Mangystau region. It brought together over 100 participants, including representatives from public authorities, industrial enterprises, environmental services, startups, and research institutions.

At the heart of the discussions were urgent regional issues such as oil production waste and solid household waste management, wastewater treatment, freshwater scarcity, air pollution, soil degradation, and greening of arid areas.

Across five thematic sessions, participants explored solutions in the following areas:

air pollution reduction,
water resource management,
urban green infrastructure,
sustainable waste management, and
the development of renewable energy sources.

Each session featured presentations from local government agencies outlining specific technological challenges, followed by innovative solutions proposed by startups and technology teams from across Kazakhstan. Among the participants were KazhydrometCaspian Heat and Water AuthorityAltai Agro Farm LtdSmart Energy TreeDala-Ecos Technology, and others.

A special focus was given to a working session on the implementation of environmental reform, particularly the transition of industrial enterprises to Comprehensive Environmental Permits (CEP) and the introduction of Best Available Techniques (BAT). Participants discussed the provisions of the new Environmental Code, the mandatory transition to CEPs starting in 2025, stages of BAT implementation, and the need for comprehensive techno-economic audits. The Center also presented its BAT sectoral reference documents, developed for 12 sectors of the economy.

In his welcome remarks, Bauyrzhan Abenov, Managing Director and Head of the BAT Bureau of the IGTIPC, emphasized the importance of systemic transformation:

“In the face of stringent environmental requirements and climate change, we must move from isolated interventions to systemic eco-compatibility. This cannot be achieved without open cooperation between government, business, and technology developers. Kazakhstan has a unique opportunity to demonstrate how transformation can be not just a necessity but also a driver of growth, resilience, and collaboration.”

The event reaffirmed the readiness of participants to act jointly. Representatives of the region’s largest industrial enterprises — including Karazhanbasmunai JSCMangistaumunaigas JSCKazAzot JSC, and MAEK — took part in the discussions, along with water management organizations and youth-led initiatives.

The format of the event facilitated direct engagement between those setting the environmental agenda and those offering tangible technological solutions. A key outcome was not only the discussion of pressing issues but also the formation of long-term cooperation pathways for implementing green technologies and modernizing production infrastructure.

The Green Tech Commercialization Reactor in Aktau marked another important step toward Kazakhstan’s ecological transformation — powered by technology, partnership, and strategic thinking.
