Germany – Employees of the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects (IGTIC) have studied Germany’s advanced experience in implementing Best Available Techniques (BAT) in the waste management sector, the mechanisms for developing BAT reference documents, and opportunities for establishing partnerships with leading German organizations to further apply these solutions in Kazakhstan.
During a working trip to Germany, IGTIC specialists visited key industry enterprises covering all stages of the waste management cycle. At Ecowest, the delegation was presented with a modern municipal solid waste management system. Particular attention was given to organic waste composting processes and biogas production. At Lobbe, employees examined the full infrastructure for handling liquid waste—from intake and safe storage to pre-treatment and final disposal.
The visit to Remondis provided an opportunity to study waste-to-energy technologies in detail, including fuel preparation, combustion control parameters, multi-stage flue gas cleaning, and emissions monitoring systems. At the modern Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Westsachsen landfill, the delegation explored methods for managing residual waste fractions, engineering protection systems, leachate and biogas collection mechanisms, as well as Germany’s integrated environmental monitoring practices.
A separate part of the program was dedicated to meetings with Germany’s public authorities. At the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) in Dessau, IGTIC specialists examined the methodology for preparing BAT reference documents, mechanisms for expert review and approval, as well as Germany’s experience in implementing BAT across various industrial sectors. In Berlin, IGTIC employees met with representatives of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The parties discussed national waste management policies, tools for monitoring BAT implementation, and opportunities to expand cooperation between Kazakhstan and Germany in the field of environmental regulation.
The knowledge gained, practical insights, and expert consultations will serve as an important foundation for improving Kazakhstan’s national waste management system and developing Kazakhstani BAT reference documents. Germany’s experience will help accelerate the introduction of modern, environmentally safe, and technologically efficient solutions in Kazakhstan.
