Italy and Kazakhstan Set to Jointly Launch Green Technology Projects

Italy and Kazakhstan intend to develop joint projects in the field of green technologies, covering industrial decarbonization, renewable energy, water and waste management, and the localization of advanced environmental solutions. The announcement was made during the inaugural session of the dialogue platform and business forum “B5+Italy” in Astana. The event focused on expanding Kazakh-Italian cooperation and shifting from intergovernmental agreements to the practical execution of joint initiatives.Kazakhstan proposes establishing a joint portfolio of pilot green projects with the participation of Italian enterprises. Beyond deploying turnkey technologies, the initiative targets the creation of joint ventures, local manufacturing of equipment, pilot project implementation, and scientific and technological collaboration. Speaking at a panel session on energy transition and sustainable development, Saken Kalkamanov, Chairman of the Board of the International Green Technologies and Investment Projects Center (IGTIC), outlined key avenues for expanding international partnership.Priority sectors include renewable energy, industrial decarbonization, water management, waste recycling, and the circular economy. The IGTIC aims to serve as a practical driver for this cooperation by facilitating green technology transfer and attracting environmental investments. Key operations of the Center encompass implementing Best Available Techniques (BAT), expanding the Registry of Green Technologies and Projects, and offering end-to-end support for investment projects.Special emphasis is placed on establishing financing mechanisms for projects listed in the Green Technologies Registry, notably through concessional lending. This framework is designed to transition individual pilot initiatives toward full-scale commercialization.Promising areas for Kazakh-Italian collaboration further extend to green hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, digitalized water resource management, modern recycling solutions, and the integration of industrial waste back into the economic cycle.The groundwork for advancing ecological cooperation stems from the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security of the Italian Republic during the Regional Climate Summit in Astana in April 2026.Regulatory frameworks required to execute these joint initiatives are currently being drafted. The upcoming COP31 summit in Antalya will serve as an additional platform to deepen collaboration, where Kazakhstan plans to showcase its climate solutions and investment potential across decarbonization, renewables, energy efficiency, waste and water management, sustainable agriculture, and industrial modernization.
