The Global Cleantech Innovation Program (GCIP) is one of the flagship programs of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and UNIDO that promotes cleantech innovation and entrepreneurship. UNIDO, as a program operator, is working to create innovative ecosystems that support industrial transformation that enables businesses and industries to enter the clean energy value chain.

In the current cycle, GCIP starts in 16 countries: Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, Morocco, Turkey, Nigeria, the South Africa, Lesotho, Cambodia, Indonesia, Uruguay, Namibia, Senegal, Pakistan, Mongolia, Vietnam.

The program is designed to help the 16 participating countries organize a National Competition to identify innovators and expand its geographical coverage to create a global technology platform in the field of clean technologies.

The goal of the Program is to promote innovations in the field of environmentally friendly technologies and entrepreneurship for low-carbon development in Kazakhstan by developing an innovative platform and an accelerator of clean technologies within three years (2023-2025).

The NCJSC "International Green Technologies and Investments Center" (hereinafter – Center) is defined as an organization - Project Executor in accordance with the letter of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated 16.01.2020 year No. 13-04-107/И

On April 9, 2021, the full package of developed documents on GCIP-Kazakhstan was adopted by the Global Environment Facility (hereinafter – GEF) (GEF ID: 10458). An official letter was received from the Director of the Energy Department at UNIDO, Mr. Tarek Emtair, that Kazakhstan had prepared a package of documents with high quality and was one of the first of 10 countries to submit a package of documents.

As a result, on December 8, 2021, the Project “Global Cleantech Innovation Program in Kazakhstan - Promoting Cleantech Innovation and Entrepreneurship in SMEs to Create Green Jobs in Kazakhstan” (hereinafter – GCIP-Kazakhstan) was approved by the Chief Executive Officer and GEF Chairman Mr. Carlos M. Rodriguez and received a corresponding official letter on the allocation of a grant for the implementation of GCIP-Kazakhstan.

The program is aimed at activating new enterprises in the field of clean technologies through the strengthening of institutional capacity and financial mechanisms for the development and implementation of innovative solutions in the field of clean technologies. GCIP approaches include pre-selection, acceleration and commercialization of start-ups, based on competition, to identify the most promising entrepreneurs in 7 areas: energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, efficient water use, advanced materials and chemicals, green building and transport.

In order to identify and accelerate startups, annual Cleantech competitions will be held to select 30-40 promising projects in the field of clean technologies that will attract public and private investment. It is planned that according to the results of the 3-year program, with the help of state support, 100 new companies will be created, and 13 companies will be introduced to the global market of clean technologies.
